  • Calif. pharmacists now furnishing Rx birth control to patients

    SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Regulations that allow pharmacists to directly provide prescription contraceptives to patients took effect April 8. Besides allowing pharmacists to provide hormonal contraceptives, the legislation also allows them to furnish prescription smoking cessation services, travel medications, an expanded list of immunizations. The legislation also create an Advanced Practice Pharmacist license. 
     
  • Walgreens makes naloxone available without a prescription in Pennsylvania

    DEERFIELD, Ill. - Walgreens on Monday announced it has made naloxone available without requiring a prescription from an individual’s physician in all of its Pennsylvania pharmacies in accordance with state pharmacy regulations.
     
  • Mylan launches intermediate doses of its Lopressor generic

    PITTSBURGH — Mylan on Monday announced the launch of its generic Lopressor (metoprolol tartrate) tablets in 37.5- and 75- mg. The launch makes Mylan the first manufacturer to offer a Lopressor generic in five dosage strengths, which include 25-, 50- and 100-mg strengths in addition to the intermediate strengths. 
     
    The drug is indicated to treat hypertension and saw $68.9 million in U.S. sales across all manufacturers for the 12 months ended February 2016, according to IMS Health. 
     
  • NACDS, NCPA reach out to maintain TRICARE beneficiary access to Rx meds

    WASHINGTON – In their ongoing commitment to protect TRICARE beneficiaries’ access to prescription medications, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores and the National Community Pharmacists Association sent letters last week to the chairmen and ranking members of the House Armed Services Committee and the Senate Armed Services Committee urging them to protect TRICARE beneficiary access by refusing to further increase retail community pharmacist copayments. 
  • FDA approves Aurobindo’s generic Valcyte

    SILVER SPRING, Md. — Aurobindo Pharma on Wednesday received Food and Drug Administration for its generic Valcyte (valganciclovir) tablets. The drug is indicated to treat cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, as well as to prevent CMV in high-risk kidney, heart, or kidney-pancreas transplant. 
     
    The product has an estimated market size of $390.6 million for the 12 months ending February 2016 according to IMS Health. The drug will be available in 450-mg tablets. 
  • Mylan launches generic Epivir

    PITTSBURGH — Mylan on Wednesday launched its generic Epivir (lamivudine) tablets. The drug is indicated to treat HIV-1 infections alongside other retroviral agents. 
     
    Mylan’s lamivudine will be available in 150- and 300-mg dosage strengths. The drug had U.S. sales of about $27.1 million for the 12 months ended December 2015. 
     
  • Pfizer introduces first and only biosimilar monoclonal antibody therapy

    NEW YORK - The United States Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday approved Celltrion’s Inflectra (biosimilar infliximab) across all eligible indications of the reference product, Remicade (infliximab). Inflectra is now the first and only biosimilar monoclonal antibody (mAb) therapy, and only the second biosimilar, to be approved in the U.S.
