  • NRF: Retailers had a good January

    Retail sales sizzled in January, beating expectations. Even the struggling department store sector managed to beat the odds.
     
    Retail sales, excluding automobiles and gasoline, grew 0.4% in January, according to the National Retail Federation. (The numbers exclude automobiles, gasoline stations and restaurants)
     
  • CVS highlights ‘Snacks That Give Back’ at more than 2,300 stores

    WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Pharmacy launched a new initiative, “Snacks That Give Back,” which highlights more than 30 better-for-you snacks that support charitable causes, fair labor and sustainability.

    These products are featured at a trend zone-themed area in the store at 2,367 locations through early May.

  • Walmart not combining store, online buying teams

    Despite an earlier report to the contrary, Walmart is not combining its online and store buying functions.
     
    Reuters had reported that the discounter was combining its online and store buying operations as it moves to make itself more competitive with Amazon. The report was picked up by numerous media outlets.
     
    Based on information from Walmart, however, the chain is not merging the stores and walmart.com buying teams. The two will continue to operate as two separate teams.  
     
  • Accenture finds shift in shopper expectations for loyalty programs

    NEW YORK — Organizations are throwing away billions of dollars annually on customer loyalty programs that just don’t work like they used to.
     
    This was revealed in the Accenture report, “Seeing Beyond the Loyalty Illusion: It’s Time You Invest More Wisely.” The study gauges the experiences and attitudes of 25,426 consumers around the world about their current loyalty relationship with brands and organizations.
     
  • Giant introduces new pharmacy technology at reopened Virginia store

    FAIRFAX, Va. — Giant reopened a 49,000-sq.-ft. store here on Feb. 9 featuring a pilot for pick-up point technology at its full-service pharmacy. The new technology utilizes LED lights to illuminate the prescription in the drawer where it’s kept, limiting the amount of time a pharmacist will spend looking for a filled prescription.

    According to Giant, this new technology is designed to create a much more efficient method of retrieving prescriptions.

  • CVS accredited with CEO Cancer Gold Standard

    WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Health was accredited with the CEO Cancer Gold Standard from the CEO Roundtable on Cancer, in recognition of the retailer’s efforts to reduce the risk of cancer for its employees and covered family members.

    CVS was specifically honored for taking actions in five key areas of health and wellness to fight cancer in the workplace, including: discouraging tobacco use; encouraging physical activity; promoting healthy diet and nutrition; detecting cancer at its earliest stages; and providing access to quality care.
