GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. -- Dollar General reported a 2.2% lift in same store sales for the first quarter as the discounter said sales of consumables led growth in the period.

NEW YORK — Walgreens VP corporate operations Skip Bourdo, alongside Comic Relief trustee Christy Gibb, literally rang in Red Nose Day 2016 — the charity’s annual fundraising campaign to help children in the poorest areas of the U.S. and the world — by ringing the Opening Bell at the Nasdaq Stock Market’s Times Square headquarters. Representatives from NBCUniversal and Mars Chocolate North America were also in attendance.

H-E-B announces $250,000 in scholarships to UIW's new health professions program

SAN ANTONIO — H-E-B announced early this week that it will partner with the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) to award the first 25 public high school students to enroll in UIW's new Texas Top 5% Direct Admit Health Professions Program with $2,500 scholarships renewable up to four years ($10,000 per student) — a total of $250,000 for the program.
Weis to acquire 5 Baltimore County stores from Mars Super Markets

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets announced this week that it would be purchasing five stores from Marts Super Markets in Baltimore County, Md. including two in Dundalk and one each in Essex, Arbutus and Carney.

The company said it expects to complete the purchase in late July, at which time it will operate nine Baltimore County stores.
CVS Health’s Rx-free naloxone effort to reach 30 states by August

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Health on Wednesday announced that its push to curb opioid overdose by providing overdose reversal drug naloxone without a prescription would hit 30 states by August through expansion to seven new states this summer. The initiative works by establishing a standing order with an in-state physician to allow pharmacists to dispense the drug to patients without individual prescriptions. The company has already begun dispensing naloxone in 23 states.

Meijer opened two of its planned nine new and 32 remodeled stores in 2016 across the Michigan-based retailer's six-state footprint. According to MLive.com, the new 192,000 square-foot supercenters in Evansville, Ind. and Owensboro, Ky., are built to Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design standards and will be open 24 hours a day. DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens Boots Alliance thanked Barry Rosenstein, managing partner of JANA Partners and outgoing board director, for his service since September 2016. Rosenstein’s board service was set to end once JANA reduced its investment in Walgreens below a certain threshold, which happened this week, though it still holds a significant stake in Walgreens.
