  • CEO Mike Bloom among three named to Fred’s board of directors

    MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fred’s Pharmacy on Tuesday appointed Christopher W. Bodine, Peter J. Bocian and Michael K. Bloom, Fred’s Pharmacy’s CEO, to its Board of Directors, effective immediately. In connection with the announcement, Michael J. Hayes, John R. Eisenman and Jerry A. Shore will retire from the Board and not stand for reelection at the 2017 Annual Meeting of Shareholders.

Chodnowsky brings more than 25 years of diversified experience as a consultant and strategic marketing leader in B2B competitive intelligence for leading multinational companies, the company stated.

  • J.M. Smith names new CEO

    SPARTANBURG, S.C. — J.M. Smith announced recently that there is a new face at the helm of the company. Effective March 1, A. Alan Turfe is the company’s CEO and chairman of its board of directors, having been selected by the board after a nationwide search. He joins the company from Fresenius Medical Care, where he was SVP and chief procurement officer. 
     
  • Jobless claims at lowest level since 1973

    WASHINGTON — The Miami Dolphins had just completed an undefeated season, winning Super Bowl XII by a score of 14-7 over the Washington Redskins. Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly with His Song” was No. 1 on the Billboard charts.

    The date was March 31, 1973, the last time initial jobless claims were lower than today’s figures, released Thursday by the U.S. Department of Labor. In March 1973, initial jobless claims were 222,000.

  • Extra week in Q4, FY2016 boosts Publix’s sales

    LAKELAND, Fla. — Publix Supermarkets’ sales and profit rose in the fourth quarter amid continued expansion.
        
    Publix’s net earnings for the fourth quarter rose 4.5% to $544.5 million, from $521.1 million in the year-ago period.
     
    Sales rose 11.1% to $9.1 billion. (The additional week in the fourth quarter of 2016 increased sales by 7.4%.) Same-store sales increased 2.2%.
     
  • Dollar Tree posts $5.6B in sales to cap a busy fiscal 2016

    Higher customer spending and lower costs help drive better-than-expected fourth quarter sales and profit at Dollar Tree.
     
    The discounter’s solid quarterly performance capped a year in which it opened 584 new stores and exceeded $20 billion in sales. 
     
    Dollar Tree reported net sales of $5.64 billion for the quarter ended Jan. 28, up 5.0% from $5.37 billion in the year-ago period.
     
  • CVS Health names Jon Roberts EVP, COO

    WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Health on Thursday appointed veteran executive Jonathan C. Roberts to the new position of EVP and COO. He will continue to report directly to Larry Merlo, president and CEO. Roberts currently serves as president of CVS Caremark, the company's pharmacy benefit management business.

  • P&G contributes to Albany, Georgia tornado relief efforts

    CINCINNATI — Procter & Gamble has been helping with relief efforts in Albany, Georgia, which was hit by a massive tornado on Jan. 22. The company on Monday presented the United Way of Southwest Georgia with a  $20,000 donation to help rebuild the community, which follows P&G distributing more than $3000,000 worth of its products and 400 loads of laundry washed through Tide’s Loads of Hope, among other efforts.
