  • Galderma launches new Mirvaso Gel pump dispenser

    FORTH WORTH, Texas — Galderma Laboratories announced Thursday that it had launched a new pump dispenser system for its Mirvaso (brimonidine) topical gel. The gel treats facial redness associated with rosacea and the new pump dispenses a consistent dose with each use. 
     
  • FDA issues safety alert for diabetes meds Invokana, Invokamet

    SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday issued a safety alert about the diabetes medicine canagliflozin (Invokana, Invokamet). An ongoing clinical trial has found an increase in leg and foot amputations, mostly affecting the toes, in patients treated with the drug.
     
    Although the FDA has not determined whether canagliflozin increases the risk of leg and foot amputations, it is currently investigating the issue and will update the public when it has more information.
     
  • PrescribeWellness expands pharmacy practice innovation team with new hire

    IRVINE, Calif. — PrescribeWellness on Tuesday announced a new addition to its pharmacy practice innovation team as it advances its delivery of clinical services to its national pharmacy network. Farah Madhat will be the company’s new director of clinical services, joining the company from OptumRx, where she directed that company’s pharmacy reimbursement/pharmacy audit division. 
     
  • FDA warns of serious side effects from certain antibiotics

    SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration issued a safety message late last week concerning the potential for serious side effects associated with fluoroquinolone antibiotics. 
     
  • Cigna inks outcome-based payment contracts with makers of Praluent, Repatha

    BLOOMFIELD, Conn. — Cigna on Tuesday announced that it had signed value-based contracts with the makers of PCSK9 inhibitors Praluent and Repatha. The contracts — with Sanofi and Regeneron for Praluent and Amgen for Repatha — will tie patient outcomes to the price Cigna pays for the medications, which have been estimated to cost as much as $14,000 per patient per year. 
     
  • Hibiclens reduces surgical site infections

    NORCROSS, Ga. — Hibiclens, an antimicrobial cleanser recommended for use before surgery to help reduce surgical site infections, MRSA or a Staphylococcus infection, is a perfect example of how pharmacists can help transition patients from hospital to home.

  • Mylan launches generic Apresoline injection

    PITTSBURGH —  Mylan recently launched its generic Apresoline (hydralazine HCl) injection. The 20-mg/ml injection is indicated to treat  severe hypertension in cases where a drug can’t be given orally or in cases where a patient has an urgent need to lower blood pressure. 
     
    The treatment had U.S. sales of about $63.4 million in the 12 months ended March 21, according to Mylan.
