  • NRF: Retailers had a good January

    Retail sales sizzled in January, beating expectations. Even the struggling department store sector managed to beat the odds.
     
    Retail sales, excluding automobiles and gasoline, grew 0.4% in January, according to the National Retail Federation. (The numbers exclude automobiles, gasoline stations and restaurants)
     
  • Angry Orchard rolls out seasonal Tapped Maple, limited-release Spiced Apple varieties

    WALDEN, N.Y. — Angry Orchard on Tuesday announced the launch of its latest cider inspired by the seasons. Angry Orchard Tapped Maple, which is available through April, takes its inspiration from the late winter tapping of maple trees, blending American culinary apple with a hint of Vermont maple syrup. 
     
  • Nivea highlights cold weather skincare essentials

    NEW YORK — Skincare brand Nivea is highlighting the importance of skincare as the winter wears on. The company has two products that have withstood several winters that it says can be central to a winter skincare routine. 
     
    Nivea Creme, which has been around for over 100 years, contains jojoba oil and vitamin E and is meant for use on the driest skin. The formula contains the moisturizing ingredient eucerit to keep skin soft. Nivea Creme is available in 1-, 2-, 3.3- and 6.8-oz. tins.

  • Fred’s Pharmacy sees progress in specialty pharmacy sales

    MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fred’s Pharmacy saw total sales for the month of January decline 5.6% year over to $148.1 million from $156.9 million. Comparable-store sales for the month decreased by 4.8% versus an increase of 0.7% during the prior year period.

    As for its 2016 fourth quarter, total sales for the fourth quarter of 2016 decreased 4.3% year over year to $530.7 million from $554.6 million in the fourth quarter of 2015. On a comparable-store basis, Q4 sales decreased 3.6% versus an increase of 1.7% in the year-earlier period.

  • NRF: Valentine’s Day sales will not be as sweet for first time in decade

    WASHINGTON, D.C. — Valentine’s Day 2017 will not be as sweet for retailers. U.S. consumers are expected to spend an average of $136.57 this year, compared to last year’s record high of $146.84, according to a survey released by the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics. This would be the first such decline on Valentine’s Day spending in a decade.

    Total U.S. spending for Feb. 14 is also expected to drop from last year’s record of $19.7 billion to $18.2 billion this year.

  • Eating healthier, losing weight two of top three 2017 resolutions

    NEW YORK – This year the top New Year's resolutions among American adults all revolve around two main themes: health and money, Harris Poll reported Thursday. Most commonly, adults are resolving to eat healthier (29%), save more money (25%), lose weight (24%), drink more water (21%) and/or pay down debt (17%). Slightly less common resolutions are to spend more time with family/friends (15%), become more organized (15%), travel more (15%), read more (14%) and/or improve relationships (14%).
