  • Walgreens Boots Alliance sues Theranos for $140 million

    Walgreens Boots Alliance has filed a suit against Theranos seeking $140 million in damages. Walgreens filed the suit, Walgreen Co. v. Theranos Inc., U.S. District Court, District of Delaware, No. 16-01040 under seal, so the retailer did not issue a statement.

    However, the suit is likely regarding its June 12 announcement that Deerfield, Ill.-based Walgreens was terminating its relationship and closing operations at all 40 Theranos Wellness Centers at its stores. 

  • WSJ: Soda taxes gaining steam, approved in at least 4 cities

    Voters in San Francisco, Oakland and nearby Albany, Calif., on Tuesday approved a penny-per-ounce levy on non-alcoholic drinks with caloric sweeteners, affecting everything from cola to sports drinks and ice tea to energy drinks.

    The Wall Street Journal reports that in Boulder, Colo., residents approved a ballot measure calling for a tax of two cents per ounce.

    Meanwhile in Chicago, a vote is expected this week on a penny-per-ounce tax that also would include beverages with zero-calorie sweeteners like diet soda.

    MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fred’s Pharmacy announced this week that in honor of Veteran’s Day, which is on Nov. 11, the company is offering veterans, active duty military personnel, reservists and their immediate family members a 15% discount. 
     
    “Fred's Pharmacy is joining in support of our armed forces to say ‘thank you for your service,’” Fred’s EVP store operations John Foley said. “We owe our freedom to these brave men and women who work and live in our local communities.”

    DEERFIELD, Ill. - Walgreens on Monday announced the integration of Novartis' Heart Partner app to its Balance Rewards for Health Choices API.

    "For [heart failure] patients it is sometimes difficult to keep up with a healthier lifestyle and managing their treatment," Walgreens developer evangelist Drew Schweinfurth posted in a blog. "The newly developed Heart Partner app helps coordinate care in a simple and easy way.  The app allows for tracking daily activity and vitals such as blood pressure or weight [and] medication compliance."
