  • CRN announces addition of 11 new companies to membership roster

    WASHINGTON —The Council for Responsible Nutrition on Tuesday announced the addition of 11 new companies to the association’s membership roster.

    These companies include voting members Before Brands, Biova, Life Line Foods, Natrol, Nutrawise, Pharma Tech Industries, Shanghai Freemen and Trident Brands and associate members Michael Schaeffer, LLC, Natural Partners and SRQ-Bio.

    NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Pharmavite on Monday named Jeff Boutelle the company's new CEO and board member, effective Aug. 7. Noriko Tojo, Pharmavite's current CEO will continue to serve as chair of Pharmavite's board and CEO of Otsuka Medical Devices.

    CHANDLER, Ariz. — Coffee Booster won the ECRM/Drug Store News Buyers Choice Award for its line of liquid health supplements for coffee during ECRM’s Weight Management, Sports Nutrition & Vitamin EPPS held here recently. And Corr-Jensen was a finalist with its ORB Sleep Complex vitamins.

    The two companies were selected from dozens of entries in the award program, samples of which were displayed in the ECRM hospitality area during the EPPS meetings. Buyers cast their votes based on product innovation and packaging.

  • KKR bets on health, wellness with Nature's Bounty Co. stake and WebMD acquisition

    New York — Kohlberg Kravis Roberts on Monday made two massive deals in the health and wellness space, acquiring WebMD outright and taking a majority stake in Carlyle Group's Nature's Bounty Co. Taken together, the two deals couple a significant player in delivering health and wellness through retail and the go-to online source of information when consumers are researching health and wellnesss issues.

    WebMD sold for $2.8 billion; financial terms regarding the stake in Nature's Bounty were not disclosed.

    SAN DIEGO — Designer Protein announced Thursday the launch of two new Designer Whey flavors, including chocolate mocha and vanilla coconut. These new offerings will be available immediately online and in select retailers within the coming weeks.

    The new Designer Whey flavors will be available in 12 oz. packages and will retail for $14.49 each.

  • TABS Analytics: Walmart helped propel online VMS sales

    SHELTON, Conn. —  Online sales for vitamins, minerals and supplements surged 20% this year, growing from $2 billion in 2016 to $2.4 billion in 2017, according to TABS Analytics’ 10th Vitamins, Minerals and Supplements Study. Much of the growth is due to the performance of brick and mortar online retailers, which outpaced Amazon and other pure play outlets in growth and gained almost 19 percentage points in online transaction share.
