  • Study: Growth in prescription spending drops

    DANBURY, Conn. — Growth in U.S. spending on prescription medicines fell in 2016 as competition intensified among manufacturers, and payers ramped up efforts to limit price increases, according to research released on Thursday by the QuintilesIMS Institute. New medicines introduced in the past two years continue to drive at least half of total spending growth as clusters of innovative treatments for cancer, autoimmune diseases, HIV, multiple sclerosis, and diabetes become accessible to patients.

    SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation awarded $230,000 in scholarships and grants through its 2017 NACDS Foundation Scholarship Program. The recipients were presented with their awards Monday night at an NACDS Foundation event during the NACDS Annual Meeting.

  • Albertsons trains first pharmacy tech in nation to administer immunization

    BOISE, Idaho — An Albertsons pharmacy technician has become the first in the nation to administer an immunization to a patient. The new ability for the technician is the product of new law in Idaho brought about by a partnership between Albertsons and Washington State University College of Pharmacy, who worked together to develop the first pilot program to train pharmacy technicians to provide immunizations with permission from the Idaho board of pharmacy.

  • Walgreens Healthcare Clinic to offer HIV, STI testing in multiple markets

    DEERFIELD, Ill. — Beginning April 25, Walgreens Healthcare Clinic locations in 18 markets will offer testing services for sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, Hepatitis B and C, chlamydia and gonorrhea.

    ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Industry veteran Bruce Kneeland is heading to the Last Frontier.

    Good Neighbor Pharmacy and PrescribeWellness are co-sponsoring the Eight Great Pharmacies in Alaska road trip, set to take place in June.

    Kneeland is working with managers from Good Neighbor Pharmacy, PrescribeWellness, the Alaska State Pharmacy Association and others who know the area to solicit nominations. Kneeland is specifically looking for pharmacies that are doing noteworthy things that help them provide better care while also achieving financial success.
